Humvee M1097A2

In 1979, the United States Army ordered the development of a multipurpose vehicle to replace several types of military transport vehicles. In addition, the vehicle was required to be able to move behind tanks on the tracks laid down by their caterpillar treads. As a result, the new vehicle was characterized by a wide wheel track and high ground clearance. After a series of tests, mass production of the new highly mobile multipurpose wheeled vehicle, called HMMWV, began in 1985. As part of the U.S. Army, it was called Humvee (a shortening of HMMWV). Many modifications can be made to the vehicle for a variety of purposes. Globally, more than 70 countries employ the system in their armed forces. Next-generation M1097A2 vehicles are used to transport personnel and cargo, as well as mount a variety of weapons and special equipment.
